He slept there. Just under the chair by the door. Outside, golden rays of the afternoon sun bathed the deck and the garden. A soft breeze blew about, rustling the leaves and ruffling the tips of his black and white fur.
I slowly got of my seat; stepping away from my laptop perched just atop the table, and silently crept toward him; my family’s little Dalmatian. As I stalked closer and closer, I got on my knees, then hands, then leaned in until my elbows touched the floor so that I my face was just mere inches away from his.
From here, I could see the tiny flies that flew closely to his body. Just cruising for a while, then landing on his fur, making him flinch slightly, then taking off and cruising again.
I held my gaze on those miniscule insects for a while before landing it upon his closed eyes. Up close, he smelt a little funny, like he had gone off without taking a bath for a while and I wrinkled my nose a little.
Then, I leaned in just a tad bit more and whispered his name.
“Harper.”
He did not move. I tried again, a little louder this time, but still he remained unstirred. I extended my hand, murmured his name once more and poked his nose gently, it was soft and wet, and I smirked a little. Partly because that meant that he was healthy and more because he still had not woken up. Once again I extended my arm, and this time, poked his nose twice. His eye twitched and I stifled a giggle. He always was a heavy sleeper.
I whispered his name again, inching closer still and underneath me, the floorboards creaked and his eyes opened. One dark brown and the other light blue. A thumping could be heard as his now wagging tail landed several times upon the wooden floor, and this time, he inched closer.
And licked my nose.
Based on a true, little event that happened between me and one of my family's Dalmatians. I'll be posting a picture of him soon.
